On the night of November 23rd, 1654, Blaise Pascal sat alone in Paris. He was one of the most celebrated minds in France — a treatise on conics at 16, a calculating machine at 19 — and genius had never once given him peace. Then, from about half past ten until about half past midnight, God met him. The man who spent his whole life proving things did not write a proof. The first word he wrote down was Fire. Then certainty, feeling, joy, peace, tears of joy. As far as anyone knows, he never spoke of that night to a single soul. This morning devotional walks through three truths: rest is an invitation and not a reward you earn (Matthew 11:28-30 • Exodus 33:14 • Mark 6:31), you can stop working and never stop carrying (Psalm 127:2 • 1 Peter 5:7 • Ruth 3:18), and God prepared this rest for you before you had ever worked a single day (Genesis 2:3 • Hebrews 4:9-10 • Psalm 46:10). You will also hear the one thing that silently drains this rest from believers who do everything else right — and what Pascal’s family found sewn inside the lining of his coat eight years later.
