Want to Understand the World? Read These Books | Tom Woods

Here’s my short list of books I would recommend to someone who is interested in the ideas on this site and wants to learn more. If you read and absorb these books you will never look at the world the same way again.

If you’re like me, you are annoyed by books that teach you three new things. My time is limited. I like books that are full of things I didn’t know, or ideas I’d never thought of.

The books I recommend below belong in that category. They teach you something new and unexpected on every page. And they are a perfect antidote to the propaganda fed to us in the ideological prison camps where most of us spent our formative years. I list them in no particular order.

Economics in One Lesson, by Henry Hazlitt. Important for beginners. Also useful for beginners is Peter Schiff’s book How an Economy Grows and Why It Crashes.

The Revolution: A Manifesto, by Ron Paul. This is another good one for beginners. It has a good track record as a proselytizing device.

The Problem of Political Authority: An Examination of the Right to Coerce and the Duty to Obey, by Michael Huemer. An extremely convincing defense of libertarianism that features powerful common-sense analogies as well as arguments drawn from basic moral intuitions shared by everyone.

Modern Times: The World From the Twenties to the Nineties, by Paul Johnson. I strongly prefer the earlier edition that went only through the 1980s, because Johnson starts sounding like a neocon by the time he gets to the Persian Gulf War of 1991. Ignore all that. The rest of the book is astonishingly good, and a devastating indictment of the collectivism of the 20th century.

Democracy: The God that Failed, by Hans-Hermann Hoppe. Just read it. Trust me on this.

The Left, the Right, and the State, by Lew Rockwell. Lew (who of course runs the indispensable LewRockwell.com) did the world an incalculable service with the founding of the Mises Institute, but he is grossly underrated as a thinker in his own right. He has extended Rothbardian thought in numerous ways, and has influenced my own thinking more than almost anyone in the world.

The Quest for Community, by Robert Nisbet. Here is a graduate course in political philosophy. Except in this one, the state is not the glorious summit of civilization and the indispensable source of human flourishing. As the new edition explains, “Nisbet argued that the rise of the powerful modern state had eroded the sources of community—the family, the neighborhood, the church, the guild. Alienation and loneliness inevitably resulted. But as the traditional ties that bind fell away, the human impulse toward community led people to turn even more to the government itself, allowing statism — even totalitarianism — to flourish.”

The Austrian Theory of the Trade Cycle and Other Essays. Features essays by Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, Gottfried Haberler, and Murray N. Rothbard. An effective introduction to the Austrian theory of the business cycle. You can read or listen to it online.

What Has Government Done to Our Money? by Murray N. Rothbard. An excellent little overview of the origin of money and its fate at the hands of government. You can listen to this book (along with The Case for a 100 Percent Gold Dollar) for free.

Egalitarianism as a Revolt Against Nature and Other Essays, by Murray N. Rothbard. The quality of the essays in this book is astounding. You will not think the same way ever again after reading “Anatomy of the State” and “War, Peace, and the State,” to name just two. You can read it online.

Who’s Afraid of Elon Musk? By Ron Paul | RonPaulInstitute.org

Monday May 9, 2022

Any doubt that many progressives have abandoned their commitment to free speech was erased by the hysterical reaction to Elon Musk’s effort to purchase Twitter and return the company to its roots as a free speech zone. Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich and “woke” neocon Max Boot fretted that Musk’s commitment to free speech threatens democracy. Those confused by how free speech threatens democracy should remember that for neoconservatives and many progressives democracy means allowing the people to choose between two largely identical supporters of the welfare-warfare state. In this version of “democracy,” those whose views are outside the welfare-warfare mainstream — such as libertarians — are marginalized.

More ominous than the griping of ex-government officials and pundits was the threat of prominent Democratic politicians to haul Musk before Congress. These politicians likely want an opportunity to smear Musk and other supporters of free speech as promoters of hate and Russian (and/or Chinese) disinformation.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin and other Senate Democrats, none of whom seem to have read the First Amendment, are also investigating whether it would be “appropriate” for Congress to force tech companies to “moderate” content on their platforms.

President Biden is not waiting for legislation to ramp up the attack on free speech. His administration has created the Disinformation Governance Board located in the Department of Homeland Security. The board’s purpose is to coordinate government and private sector efforts to combat “disinformation,” with a focus on Russia. The focus on Russia is not surprising since “Russian disinformation” has joined racism and sexism as a go-to justification to smear and silence those whose views (and factual information) contradict the political and media establishment’s “party line.”

Biden’s choice to head the Disinformation Governance Board, Nina Jankowicz, is a spreader of disinformation herself. In 2020, for example, Jankowicz parroted the lie that Russia created the damning materials found on Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop. Jankowicz’s résumé also includes stints as an advisor to the Ukraine government and a manager of National Democratic Institute programs in Russia and Belarus. Jankowicz’s background suggests she will never call any lie peddled by the US war party “disinformation.”

The Disinformation Governance Board may not directly censor social media. However, by “encouraging” tech companies desperate to maintain good relations with the federal government to remove “unapproved” opinions from their platforms, it can achieve the same results. This is why anyone who values free speech, which should include everyone who cherishes liberty, should not fall for the claim that tech companies’ behavior is nothing to be concerned about since it does not involve government censorship.

Sadly, some misguided conservatives have joined progressives in promoting legislation imposing new regulations on big tech. Increased regulation will only empower Nina Jankowicz and her ilk to further pressure tech companies to restrict free speech. It will also hurt consumers by reducing the ability to find affordable goods and services online. The only way to protect free speech on the internet is to make online platforms truly private through a complete separation of tech and state.

The drive to censor is driven by the woke mob and authoritarian establishment’s fear that their policies could not maintain majority support if forced to compete in a free market of ideas. This shows that even enemies of liberty sense that the days of the welfare-warfare state are numbered.

US funding biowar research—an absurd claim, right? | Mar 21 by Jon Rappoport | NoMoreFakeNews.com

(To join Jon’s email list, click here.)

US government spokespeople—falling all over themselves to insist America would never ever set up, own, or fund biowar research labs in the Ukraine—

And would never lie about the subject—

Insisting America’s track record is clean—

And its motives pure as the driven snow—

So that’s it, right? Case closed.

Well, how about this for track record:

The US sends bio/chem/nuclear war materials and tech to a foreign nation.

Then threatens to invade that nation because it possesses weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Inspectors travel to that nation.

The inspectors report they can’t find conclusive evidence of WMD.

The US invades that nation anyway. War.

“Well, we knew they had WMD because we sent WMD to them.”

How’s that for an insane situation and a war crime?

The foreign nation is of course Iraq. And George W Bush launched the war in 2003—with the approval of Congress.

If the federal government of that nation—AMERICA—told you, in 2022, ANYTHING about biowar labs or WMD, would you believe them?

Read on. Here is a strange twisted grotesque story of the US supplying WMD to Saddam Hussein. I wrote and published it in 2016.

Wherever the word “virus” appears or is implied, I now intend it to mean “serum containing many compounds, some of which are moderately toxic, but no proven viruses.”

Nevertheless, there’s plenty of other WMD. And by the way, one of the American suppliers? THE CDC. THE US CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL. You may have heard of them.

Here we go:

Nancy Pelosi Confirms General Milley Treason | Forbiddenknowledgetv.net

Details about Bob Woodward’s new book, ‘Peril’ were reported by The Washington Post yesterday, nearly breaking Twitter, due to its account of phone calls made by Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley to his counterpart in China, General Li Zuocheng behind President Trump’s back while he was still in office.

According to the book, the first call took place on October 30, 2020, four days before the 2020 Election. The second call was on January 8, 2021, two days after the January 6th Capitol riot, which looks like bookends of the election theft op to me.

In the calls, Milley reportedly promised Li that the US was “stable” and it would not attack China or else he would warn him, first. “If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise.”

Shock Video: Fidel Castro Denied He Was a Communist Before He Gained Power

Transcript:

I’ve never seen this video before! This short clip shows a young Fidel Castro in his fatigues speaking to the camera in English – presumably to the American people – just before he gained power.

He states, “There is not Communism or Marxism in our ideas. Our political philosophy is representative democracy and social justice in a well-planned economy.”

Candace Owens comments, “Social Justice. Is that AOC? Is it Bernie Sanders? Who is that?”

Robby Starbuck, who is half-Cuban (and who just announced his political run to represent Tennessee’s 5th District) chimes in, “Tweak the voice in the backend on audio, it could be any one of these Democrat candidates. It’s the exact same thing.”

Melissa Tate, who is from Zimbabwe tweeted this video with the following text:

“People need to wake up and realize that everything that is happening in America today via the Left and the Democrat party is EXACTLY what happens preceding a country’s collapse into Socialism and Communism. I know because I LIVED IT in my own country.

“Not a single Democrat or any one in the media has come out and condemned Communism in Cuba because that’s what they are doing here! Instead, they are pretending this about COVID. They don’t want people connecting the dots with what they are doing here.

“I’m watching everything they are doing in politics, media, education and it is like Déjà Vu because I lived this before. It’s only HELL on the other side, Folks. My heart aches because I don’t want it to happen here but sadly it’s happening and Americans for most part are OBLIVIOUS. Scary.

“Now, Biden wants to start censoring your own text messages to your friends and family? You people on the Left don’t see the evil in this? You are gonna go along with this because y have been brainwashed to hate your fellow countryman because their views are different? They come for YOU next!”
