In my work as a diabetes researcher, I’ve learned two important lessons about type 2 diabetes: First, it does not have to be a one-way street—it can get better and sometimes even disappear. Second, to successfully turn around the disease, it pays to have support—from family, friends, or a class. For the past few months, the Physicians Committee has been hosting free five-week-long series of Food for Life diabetes workshops for Washington, D.C.-area residents hoping to manage type 2 diabetes by adopting a healthful, plant-based diet. Since starting in February, the program has put more than 200 people on the path toward improved health.

Better Breathing from Diet
Asthma medication sales were $15 billion in 2008 and projected to reach $17 billion by 2010 with an estimated 300 million people in Western societies suffering with breathing difficulties. Asthma is the active airway constriction bronchospasm component of a triad that makes up chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD. Bronchitis is the inflammatory part of COPD and the end result of years of inflammation is emphysema fibrosis or scarring.

Our efforts are dramatically changing the way doctors treat chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. By putting prevention over pills, doctors are empowering their patients to take control of their own health.
And we are also building a new way of viewing research. Since 1985, the Physicians Committee has been working tirelessly for alternatives to the use of animals in medical education and research and advocating for more effective scientific methods.
Our staff of physicians, dietitians, and scientists is working with policymakers, industry, the medical community, the media, and the public to create a better future for people and animals.

I have been asked by several people to comment on the recent study from Tulane that was featured prominently in The New York Times purporting to show that a low carb diet was not only more effective at losing weight than a “low fat” diet but also was better for your heart.

Let’s get straight into it shall we?…
I’ve been around the block a few times if you know what I mean, I used to take recreational drugs, be anorexic and bulimic. I was a mess and I tried to hide it behind makeup and a well-rehearsed smile.
I’ve been into health from a young age. On our farm my mum made a point of bringing us up on organic fruits and veggies. Dad made a point of working us hard and instilling the ‘stay active’ philosophy that I’ve adhered to ever since.
I moved from the country when I was 16 to the ‘big smoke’ City. I got a temporary job at McShit’s for a year before attending high school there. After school I attempted a dietetics course in college but gave it away as it was boring as hell and even then I remember saying to my mum that it just seemed wrong to give a heart attack patient beef and milk post op.
I had various jobs when I finished school – bar waitress, nude stripper (lol one night), office chick, movie theatre attendant, room housekeeper at the snow… I didn’t know what I wanted to do, all the while I was suffering from poor health and self esteem.
I gained some interesting credentials – advanced nutrition, weight training, aerobic conditioning and training special populations and became clued up on the standard nutritionists way of prescribing a healthy diet. What a joke! Anyways…
My last job before finding my true purpose was working as a personal trainer in a big gym, it was a great change from working in a boring arse office. I got to hang out with fit people and learn more about diet and lifestyle. I started off your typical “You need meat for protein” type, not really even knowing what a vegan was until I got a vegan client. I selfishly whined to her “but I could never give up my lamb…” and she gave me the exact valid reasons I give to people today, I of course fobbed them off as being too extreme. That was until my yoga teacher looked into my eyes and told me I was full of mucus and needed to basically get my shit together. She told me about veganism and juicing and that is where it all started. Unfortunately I didn’t have a clue, I tried to do raw from the info I gathered but no programs were high carb and because of a lack of glucose to the brain, I fell off the wagon quick smart.
Fast forward a few years and I was suffering big time… exhausted, pimply, farty, overweight. I started to get really unreliable and call up sick to my clients. It wasn’t a good look for a personal trainer who was meant to be healthy and fit.
The last straw was when I went to the Greek Islands in 2006 and smashed myself with vaccinations and sloppy meaty garbage. I came back a train wreck and reprimanded myself “What the fuck am I doing to myself?!” I was sick of feeling like a piece of shi…
Ultimately I found the high fruit lifestyle through a lovely girl at a raw picnic, she was on the program, I was freakin’ blown away with the results I began to experience within just a month of being on the program. Digestion became a breeze, skin was clearing up, depression was lifting…From that point on I knew this was it, I’d found IT. The most amazing lifestyle on the Planet, the one we are designed to follow.
Fast forward a year or two and I got together with my partner Durianrider.
Together we created 30bananasaday which is now the busiest raw vegan and vegan website on the web! We now have over 10,000 members and participation is very high. You can read many peoples positive testimonials here.
Fast forward another couple of years and I put out my first ebook. Called “Go FRUIT Yourself!“, you can check it out here, don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom and read the testimonials. You can also read the first chapter for free by following THIS link. Shortly I will be putting out another ebook, a 30day workbook to really kickstart your high carb, raw vegan lifestyle so stay tuned! Not only that but I am also writing a fat loss booklet featuring all my best advice about becoming a lean bean.

After viewing this book, my 3 grandsons (ages 5, 7 & 10) easily understood why people are fat and sick, and how they become well by eating the “green light” foods and avoiding the “red light” ones. Please share this free picture book with your friends, family, and co-workers.
