This fascinating conversation about performers who transcend the ego is the result of an artistโs question. She wants to align her meditation practice with her art practice because when she is creating art, she finds her truest sense of herself.
Rupert says: โItโs not that you find yourself โ you actually lose your sense of yourself as a person when youโre in the flow of creating your art. Youโre not conscious of yourself as a person โ youโre completely in the process. Thatโs what a sports player aims for in their sport. They think theyโre playing in order to win, but theyโre not. Theyโre playing because when they perform at the height of their abilities, and when they give themselves totally to the game, they have no sense of themselves as a person. Thereโs no ego present โ and that is blissful.
And thatโs why, when we watch really great players, we feel they do things that are impossible or sublime. We donโt care who wins the game โ we go to be taken beyond ourselves, to lose our limitations and to touch the eternal in us. But in order to do that as an artist or a sports person, itโs not enough to transcend yourself โ you also have to have the skill. Thatโs when your work becomes truly inspirational and touches peopleโs hearts.โ
