Fair Oaks Farms is home to over 36,000 cows that produce milk for distribution all over the Midwestern United States. However, the most impressive export of the Fair Oaks cows might not be their milk. The farm recently invested $19 million into an anaerobic digester that converts the cow manure into compressed natural gas (CNG).
A most provocative article in the latest Draft Horse Journal (full disclosure: I write for this magazine regularly) argues that an Amish farm with gross sales of $50,000 has more money to spend after necessary living expenses are paid out than a conventional farm with gross sales of $300,000 (Farming From the Heart, by Chet Kendall, p. 107ff). Kendall bases his argument on discretionary income, which is the money you have left to spend as you like after all debt payments and necessary overhead are satisfied. The American honeybee is in peril, you might have heard, if you are the sort of person who likes a ghost story. In the last year, beekeepers lost 42 percent of their colonies, another peak in a string of mass die-offs on the scale of plagues: In the last five years, die-offs have hit 34 percent, 46 percent, 29 percent, and 36 percent. That’s more than one in every three colonies each year — whole impeccably networked societies, as big as small cities. In many areas, the figures were worse, and it was hard not to wonder how a species in crisis could possibly sustain annual regional losses as high as 60 percent without fast approaching extinction. “What are we doing on bees?” the president has been said to interject at the end of Oval Office meetings. “Are we doing enough?”

Financial instability has caused a massive bank run in Greece which has resulted in billions of Euros in cash being withdrawn as of Friday night. Despite maneuvering from the Greek Central Bank, the European Central Bank and those in the European Union – this situation is completely unsustainable. So what’s next? What can be done in the event of economic collapse to allow Greece a sustainable future? Will Greece stay stick with the Euro? Will Greece leave the European Union?
