Most of the citizens of the United States are now like the victims of an abusive relationship. People try frantically to avoid breaking laws because they don’t want to be penalized. They sacrifice their own well-being and happiness in order to avoid getting into trouble. I know that I personally get a little burst of adrenaline and say, “Oh crap!” every time a police car happens to be behind me, and I drive a little more carefully, signal a little bit sooner, and make certain my full stop lasts for a count of 5 Mississippis. Our right to defend ourselves with firearms is at risk, you can’t grow vegetables in your front yard in many places, and in some states, you aren’t even allowed to collect the gift of rain to water your garden in dry times. The vast quantity of ever-multiplying statutes are so plentiful even the most law-abiding citizen cannot get through a day without unwittingly breaking one.
If the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood; if they be repealed or revised before they are promulgated, or undergo such incessant changes that no man, who knows what the law is to-day, can guess what it will be to-morrow. WASHINGTON — A new study explains how just four wells forcing massive amounts of drilling wastewater into the ground are probably shaking up Oklahoma and surrounding states including Arkansas.Those wells seem to have triggered more than 100 small-to-medium earthquakes in the past five years, according to a study published Thursday by the journal Science. Many of the quakes were much farther away from the wells than expected.Combined, those wells daily pour more than 5 million gallons of water a mile or two underground into rock formations, the study found. That buildup of fluid creates more pressure that “has to go somewhere,” said study lead author Cornell University seismologist Katie Keranen.

Antarctic sea ice hits second all-time record in a week | Talking About the Weather

Antarctic sea ice has hit its second all-time record maximum this week. The new record is 2.112 million square kilometers above normal. Until the weekend just past, the previous record had been 1.840 million square kilometers above normal, a mark hit on December 20, 2007, as I reported here, and also covered in my book.
Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, responded to e-mail questions and also spoke by telephone about the new record sea ice growth in the Southern Hemisphere, indicating that, somewhat counter-intuitively, the sea ice growth was specifically due to global warming.
