The Greeks Have Already Dumped the Euro | ZeroHedge

Via Michael Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog, [ZH: We first noted the shift to a barter economy that is occuring in Greece back in April. But Mikes excellent update below shows that this barter has progressed to a new alternative currency] Really fascinating article about how many cities and communities in Greece have already moved on from the euro to bartering as well as alternative currencies. The city of Volos, 200 miles north of Athens with a population of 170,000 is highlighted in the article due to the size of its alternative money market centered around a local currency call the Tem. This sort of behavior will be the wave of the future in all countries, as Central Bank currencies are debased into extinction. It’s interesting because while I was in Crested Butte over New Year’s I noticed they have a local currency going there called Crested Butte Bucks and I was really surprised to see that you can spend them pretty much anywhere in town. I also highlighted this trend in my post earlier this year English City of Bristol Launches its Own Local Currency. Now, from the Guardian:

Dem Representative Moves to Block Obama’s Congressional Pay Increase | The Weekly Standard

A Democratic member of Congress is moving to block President Barack Obama’s congressional pay increase. The move, led by John Barrow of Georgia, is to prevent the pay increase that Obama issued through an executive order from going into effect.

“At a time when American families face real hardship, it would be irresponsible to allow Congressional pay to increase,” says Barrow in a statement. “Too many families face uncertainty in the New Year for Congress to get a bonus. Folks expect us to be looking out for them, not ourselves, and we should be working to lower taxes, cut spending, and get our nation’s debt under control. Congress should get to work, and I urge the House leadership to do anything and everything possible to stop this pay increase for Members of Congress right away.”

Barrow’s office explains: “The Executive Order called for a pay increase for Members of Congress and other elected officials of 0.5 percent after March 27, 2013. During tonight’s votes, Congressman Barrow will urge his colleagues to sign his letter to House Leadership urging them to bring legislation to the floor to block the pay increase.”

Here’s the letter Barrow is circulating to send to House leadership:

Dear Speaker Boehner, Leader Cantor, Leader Pelosi, Whip Hoyer,

We oppose the pay increase for Members of Congress granted by Executive Order on December 27, 2012. The Executive Order would raise our salaries by $900 per year, beginning March 27, 2013.

We believe that it is inappropriate for Members of Congress to receive a pay increase of any size while American families and taxpayers continue to face tough economic times.

We urge you to bring legislation to the floor to stop this pay adjustment as soon as possible.

On The New Definition Of “Rich”, A $620 Billion Tax Hike Offset By $15 Billion In Spending Cuts, And Much More | ZeroHedge

We greet the new year with an America that has a Fiscal Cliff deal. Actually no, it doesn’t – not even close. What it does have is an agreement, so far only at the Senate level which voted a little after 2 AM eastern in an 89-8 vote (Nays from Democrats Bennet, Cardin, Harkin, and Republicans – Lee, Paul, Grassley, Rubio  and Shelby), to delay the all-important spending side of the Fiscal Cliff “deal” which “can is kicked” in the form of a 60 day extension to the sequester, to be taken up “eventually”, but hopefully not on day 59 at the 11th hour, the same as fate of the all important US debt ceiling, which remains in limbo, and which now effectively prohibits America from incurring any new gross debt as the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling was breached yesterday. In other words, America’s primary deficit sourcing mechanism is now put on hiatus, and all new net debt will come at the expense of defunding various government retirement funds as the 60 day countdown to the real showdown begins: the debt ceiling, as well as the resolution of the spending side of the Fiscal Cliff deal.

Cliff Deal – Winners and Losers | ZeroHedge

Note: I wrote the following after watching the Prez on TV. His smiling demeanor and tough guy talk led me to believe that a “patch” on the cliff might happen. Four hours later, and that is not the case. The House will not vote on anything today.

There is a chance that the House could vote tomorrow. This would bring results along the lines I describe below. But if the House does not vote, then it means there will be a long fight. A fight that could go on until the debt limit shuts the government.

These people are desperately trying to fail.

Government and Big Banks Joined Forces to Violently Crush Peaceful Protests | ZeroHedge

The definition of fascism used by Mussolini is the “merger of state and corporate power“.

Government and the big banks are in a malignant, symbiotic relationship. And our economy now exhibits a merger of state and bank power.

Everything Was Right: The Beatles’ Revolver from Paul Ingles

Piece Description

NOW AVAILABLE TO ALL OF PUBLIC RADIO. “AWESOME! BEST PIECE OF RADIO I HAVE HEARD in ages. A must listen for any Beatles fan.” PRX REVIEW by Jonathan Fahey When rock music critics and fans are asked to rank the top rock albums of all time, The Beatles’ 1966 release Revolver either heads the list or falls into the top tier. To mark the 40th anniversary year of the album’s release, award-winning producer and host Paul Ingles presents Everything Was Right: The Beatles’ “Revolver” Ingles explores the landmark album’s story and influence in depth, talking with historians, musicians, music critics, and fans and spotlighting each Revolver track (along with the 1966 single “Paperback Writer and Rain”) The Beatles experimented with new sounds and subject matter on Revolver, pioneering psychedelic rock on some tracks and exhibiting extraordinary song-craft on others. Listeners learn about the sources for the tunes, the studio experiments The Beatles used to get their ground-breaking sounds, and the lasting impact of the collection on the pop/rock music scene. Among the guest commentators is Mark Lewisohn, author of The Beatles Recording Sessions. The only journalist to have listened to every second of the Beatles’ studio recordings, Lewisohn is a major authority on the band’s history. Everything Was Right also features music writers Jim Derogatis, Steve Turner, Jeff Sobul, and Stuart Maddow. Musicians Shawn Colvin, Mark Erelli, John Leventhal, Deborah Holland, Richard Goldman, David Gans, Kristy Kruger, and Jon Spurney join other Beatle fans to talk about their favorite tracks on what is arguably the greatest album by the greatest band of all time. “…it does do a solid job of dissecting the psychology, backstory and musicianship of each song note for delicious note. This is the kind of program that makes musical pedants like myself pant with delight…this documentary does offer solid journalism, excellent production values and a style that leaves most of the talking to the interviewees. Highly recommended.” PRX REVIEW by Jonathan Groubert Program is not available for sale on CD but it is available to hear again online at http://www.coolstreams.com. “…relentless, meticulous work on the part of the producer and host, with a rich overflow of excellent interviews. Finally, once each song has been perfectly framed, they actually let you hear it in its entirety, or nearly. And it’s like you’re hearing it for the first time.” PRX REVIEW by Marjorie Van Halteren
