B&N: PIN Pad Tampering Was “Sophisticated” Crime

A couple of weeks ago I received an automated call from Bank of the Ozark’s Visa fraud division requesting confirmation that several suspicious charges were legitimate. They were not. Thanks to their “safety net” these charges did not go through. I cancelled the card and was issued a new one. I have switched to my Amex and Discover cards since then, but just heard about this scam today on NPR. I have to wonder if this happened someplace where I used my debit card as I was using it almost exclusively to keep from accumulating charge card balances. I was in Drug Emporium a couple of days ago and they were announcing every five minutes that it would be necessary to use cash or a check as their debit card system was temporarily closed down. I’ll probably never find out where my card information was compromised – could just have easily been online – but a local merchant seems more likely.
